Curly Hair Routine for Beginners
A standard curly hair routine focuses on maximizing moisture and minimizing frizz — starting with cleansing, conditioning, and applying styling products to soaking wet hair. Detangle, define, diffuse, and protect at night.
Cleanse & Condition
Use a sulfate-free shampoo to clean the scalp without stripping natural oils. Apply a generous amount of conditioner and detangle with fingers or a wide-tooth comb while hair is soaked in the shower.
Apply Leave-In
On soaking wet hair, apply a leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture before any styling product touches the strand.
Apply Styling Products
Rake or brush in a curl cream for moisture, followed by mousse or gel for hold. Light to heavy, always.
Define
Use a defining brush — like a Denman — to create clump and definition through the lengths.
Scrunch
Scrunch hair upward to encourage curl formation. Listen for the "squish" — it means your product is well-distributed.
Dry — Plop or Diffuse
Use a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt to gently remove excess water. Never rub. Air dry, or diffuse on low heat for volume.
Break the Cast
Once 100% dry, if the gel has created a hard cast, gently scrunch the curls again to soften them and reveal the bounce.
Never brush dry
Only detangle hair while it is wet and coated in conditioner. Dry brushing will shatter your curl pattern.
Protect at night
Use a satin or silk pillowcase or bonnet to prevent frizz and moisture loss while you sleep.
Refresh on day 2 / 3
Use a spray bottle with water and a little conditioner to re-style curls without re-washing.
